Best Friends
Posted July 22, 2003

What makes someone a best friend?

Best friends are friends forever. (Such confidence!)

I often think I know what to expect from my best friends, but they surprise me. They amaze and disappoint me. The disappointment doesn't upset me, and it doesn't last; I'm reminded that whatever I wanted was not necessarily what's best.

I see aesthetic value in them, and in their lives. They don't agree with me about everything; but I take on their values and their decisions as part of my own life.

Best friends don't try to make decisions for me. I don't want to make decisions for them, either. It feels good to agree that the right decision is being made, though. What is right? A best friend can help me figure out what is right for me.
